At the end of the film when Gibson and family are at the new house, he says something like "sounds good." After that there is a lifting view of the house showing the workers build. Watch the person with the axe in the lower left part of the screen.
He is chopping with one hand right next to the axe head. This provide the least amount of leverage possible. Also, he is chopping so slow that the wood is likely to become petrified before he splits it. Its just another example of a lazy extra that seems to plague Mel Gibson epics.
