Rachel can't get the pen off her face, that's why she gets really drunk (to cheer herself up) and Ross draws on his face. Next morning she comes down to breakfast with no pen on her face. You see her waking up with the pen on her face - surely if she could get it off that easily in the morning, she could have got it off the night before. Strange, huh?
There is a faint pen on her face... the breakfast scene was taped the next season.. the producers didn't know how much pen to put on their faces so they decided to make the pen marks much lighter.
the documentary made at the start of the next series showed the producers arguing over how much pen they should have on their faces and Marta Kauffman said that it would have faded enough for them to put makeup over (that's why you see Ross putting makeup on at the breakfast table) and then the next day by the time they are in the coffee house it has faded enough for them to wash off.
When Ross is on the phone with the pen company he tells them that make-up won't cover it, therefore she couldn't put make-up over it the next morning at breakfast. I have noticed this slip-up before because I've seen the Vegas episodes like 100 times. It doesn't seem like it would fade overnight.
Yes I see what you mean but if you have ink on your skin and then go to bed, the next morning it will have faded. That was the idea for this situation as Marta Kaufman said, it would then be faint enough that the make up does cover it.
