In the scene when Sir Lancelot rescues Herbert from the swamp castle, Herbert says "You got my message", but Herbert still has the message which he picks up from the table.
I had always assumed that Herbert was in the process of making several letters/messages, and that he had picked up his latest copy. It seems absurd for him to have sent just one zinging off in the off-chance that someone would stumble across it.
