Near the end of the fight between Maximus and Titanus (the undefeated guy) when maximus knocks him down you can see Titanus' mask come up.But when Maximus is supposed to kill him you can see his mask is down.
His name was Titanus if he heard a ringing in his ears.

Maximus also hit him really hard, which my have broken the mechanism to keep the face plate up and it closed. Just a hypothesis.
