In one episode, the guys are given an 'adult' film to watch. They don't know what it is so the one guy unrolls a few feet and holds the film up to the light. He announces that it's a 'porno' film. The word 'porno' wasn't used in the 70's. The film would have been called a 'stag' film or maybe a skin flick.
They also use the adejctive "sucks" on a pretty regular basis. "Suck" didn't enter the English venacular as a negative/slang adejective until the late 1980's, thanks, in large part, to another FOX television show, The Simpsons...
Actually, EricKoch is incorrect. I graduated from high school in the early eighties and the coloquial term "suck" was quite popular. In fact, one dosen't have to go back much further than that to the late seventies to remember the very popular phrase "Disco Sucks".
Use of the word "suck" was used extensively during the 60's also. I graduated from high school in 1969 and know this for a fact, since I used it a lot! LOL
Yes, yer all got good points but they may have stuck those words in so that viewers who never lived in the 70's wouldn't be totally confused. =) Besides that the rest of the show is pretty dang accurate! lol
Sorry Aaron.
In 1977, Billy, Randy, and John were friends of mine. Their nicknames were the Watson brothers, Necko, Porno, and Homo, for (evil) reasons I cannot divulge here. ;)
So yes, PORNO was used in the 1970's.
Sorry, but 'porn' was definitely used in the '70s. Ever see "Welcome Back Kotter" episode wherein the Sweathogs get ahold of (what they mistakenly THINK!) is just that sort of movie & plan to view it during lunch break? They begin to chant "PORN FLICKS FOR LUNCH!" until Kotter approaches & they switch to "CORN FLAKES FOR LUNCH!"
...oh and come to think of it Frank Zappa used the phrase "Flower power sucks sucks suckss suckssuckssuckks" on his '67 Sgt. Pepper's/acid rock parody "We're Only In It For The Money" LP!
i do agree with the comments......as a young woman in my 20s in the early 80s....and a teenager in the 70s.....i heard "that sucks" a lot! that comment has been around for awhile......
