Hackers - Who Came Up with the GUI
As you watch hackers you will see them hacking into many systems. The problem is that the GUIs are wrong. The movie is in 1995. First you see Dade hacking into OTV. That kind of GUI didnt exist. Then when Joey hacks into the gibson. NO computer has a GUI like that. Not even now. And then the plague skateboards through his computer made of glass towers. Well, you get the idea. I'm sure that this was done to make the movie look better, but to anyone that knows about computers this is annoying.

Couple of reasons behind this, i'm sure. One, yes, it does look a lot neater. Two, if this movie had been produced realistically, who would have enjoyed it besides hackers and phreakers? not many people. by making the guis so much more graphically appealing, not only do more people go ooh and ahh... but it is probably also a little easier for 'other' people to understand the concept of searching for files and hacking and the like.

Actually the GUI on the gibson does exist, but isn't half as nice, there are many 3d GUI's.

The GUI they were using is acid.exe It's a program that creates acid warp type interface. But, yes, it was lame as hell. Look at me! I'm hacking a complex system using point and click operations! This movie is a big jump from the traditional command line hacking where you actualy hack unix instead of pointing and cliking around on a wanna be browser in a wanna be 3d realm. Dont get me wrong though, the 3d job was excellent, but highly impractical for the purpose of the scene.

At the time this movie came out, I seriously doubt ANY computer could run an OS like that. It may be a 'supercomputer', but any computer such as that one that runs that much data through it probably would not have that nice of a GUI. It would probably look like DOS. And if you really want to get nitpicky, how many supercomputers do you know of that have outside Internet access that can be accessed and manipulated with a Mac? I rest my case.

This movie is so unrealistic it makes me want to kill something! It's impossible to hack a PC and navigate using it's OS you would use a ftp, prog, DOS ftp, or IE(and he was in w\real-time, full screen, on a lighting fast 28 k modem standard PCs couldn't load that OS(espically smothlly) even if it existed. And a government system would be firewalled and have systems that will scan incoming IP's and an admin would check to kick them off the sever. If you want to see a realistic computer movie with a plot see anti-trust.

c'mon, you guys be fair, if they showed the screen as hackers really do it the audience would be bored into a coma. They have to have SOME artistic liscence.
