Full Metal Jacket - Obstacle Course Time
In the scene where Hartman is screaming at everyone to go across some monkey bars he screams, "10 Seconds, it should take you no less than 10 f*cking seconds to negotiate this obstacle course!" Now we all know that Hartman wanted them to go as quick as possible, but when he says "...no less than 10 f*cking seconds..." than he is saying you shouldn't be taking any less time. Its easy to catch, but no one really thinks about it.

Yeah, I caught that one too. I thought it was really funny, and if I were one of those privates I would ache to point it out to my drill instructor. heehee

I had a Drill Sergeant who used the phrase "It ain't rocket surgery!" whenever he got pissed off, just in case some ignorant-but-earnest private wanted to try to correct him on it.... The First Rule of Boot Camp is: Anyone in a Campaign hat is smarter than you. The Second Rule of Boot Camp is: Anyone in a Campaign hat is smarter than you.

I disagree. I think he intended on saying "ten f*cking seconds". When I was in basic training they were always giving us impossible tasks to perform, knowing that it was impossible to accomplish. It was all part of the "break them down and build them up" process. It made us work harder. At the end of the cycle, we had a beer bash and barbecue to celebrate. My Senior Drill Instructor laughed at me (all in good fun) that he had really given it to me. He made me shave with a dull bayonet and all I had at that time was peach fuzz anyway!

It's a case of the incorrect phrases! "I could care less." Of course you could care less. But if I didn't care, I would say "I couldn't care less." "You can't have you cake and eat it too." Why not? That's what it's for. What you CAN'T do is eat you cake and have it too. Because if you eat your cake, you obviously can't have it anymore.

This wasnt a mistake all good DI's or DS's do that to see what genius is gonna try to correct them and i never heard the campaign hat one but i heard rule #1 NCO's are never wrong. #2 if an NCO is wrong get on your face and refer back to #1

This is not a slip-up. Just because a character in a movie uses improper English, it doesn't mean that the writer is slipping up. In fact, as a Marine, I can tell you that Drill Instructors are not the brightest people you will ever meet. The movie was accurately portraying a drill instructor.

To Bane: I would love to see you join the Marines and point that out to your DI. And this wasn't a mistake like everyone else says. DI's always give impossible tasks to make you do no less then your best. Thats one of the reasons why the Marine Corps is the most respected military service in the world.

This is a true slip up, While I am sure he meant to say "No more than 10 F*cking seconds" Drill Instructors are a special breed. We can turn grabastic pieces of juvenile sh*t into men in a about the time it takes you to go through a college math course. We are only perfect however, if you are one of our recruits!

a lot of you seem to be missing the point... in order to make the guys work harder the DI would have said something like "it should take you no LONGER than 10 seconds" etc, but he in fact says "NO LESS THAN 10 seconds", in other words he's in essence saying "take your time, you have AT LEAST 10 seconds". please take some time to read my capitalisation - it's there for a reason.
