Cannonball Run, The - Foot Race at the End?
The beginning of the Cannonball Run is quite clear -- the contestants punch a time clock and leave the hotel on a staggered basis. Everybody has a different start time and whoever makes it across the country the fastest wins.
The end of the movie has bothered me for most of my life. Why is there a heated foot race to punch the clock at the end? THEY ALL LEFT THE HOTEL AT DIFFERENT TIMES!! Burt and Dom were one of the last major players to start. They could have strolled up the pier instead of running. It seems that the writers/directors wrote the ending of the movie without rewinding the tape and watching the beginning.

Well, the Cannonballers are stalled at the roadwork site, then have a gangfight with the bikers (led by Capt. America himself, Peter Fonda). Thus bunching everyone together nicely. Then, in the process of entering the marina, the white pick-up fishtails around the corner, hitting an oncoming car. The motorcycle slides past the foreground, blocking anyone from driving in. The ambulance skids to a stop, and we hear Burt say "OK! It's a footrace!" The doc says "I got the card..." Burt:"No, gimme that, doc!" Jumping out, Burt(?) yells "C'mon! It's a footrace!" Burt leading the way, Capt. Chaos passes him. The ticket is handed off to Chaos. Chaos is distracted by a screaming woman, letting Adrienne Barbeau bounce delightfully to the win. mmmmmm.... bouncing Barbeau..... nice.....

One thing I observed about the race is that if I was driving a Lamborghini and was racing against a Chevy Van. I sure would make sure that I was so far ahead of the van that I would've made it through the area where the road block was hours before the van and everyone else got there. A Lamborghini can go nearly 200 mph+ and a chevy van on it's best day maybe 115 or so. If you even take the police as a factor to not drive too fast, then I would be driving a car with good gas mileage so I would save time due to not stopping as often to gas up.
