2010: The Year We Make Contact - Auto Vs Manual
As the astronauts prepare for the emergency escape from Jupiter orbit with Discovery and the Alexei Leonov locked together, great emphasis is placed on the need to let HAL handle the engine ignition as manual ignition could not be timed with sufficient accuracy.
Later, (at about 1:44 in the DVD) after the two ships have separated, we see the Russian captain firing the Alexei Leonov's engines manually.
