When the mother, Kate is asking the older couple to switch flights with her she is offering both first class tickets, giving her husbands TICKET away resulting with the husband without a ticket home with the rest of the family. And if she is just trading for the old ladies ticket then does the old man leave without his wife and then she comes home when Kate's flight is scheduled. Any way you look at it someone is screwed and not getting home or being left behind.
