You would think any astronaut who could be trusted to find his way to Mars would know their directions on Earth. In the scene after the three astronauts have ditched the jet in the desert, Brolin's character tells Simpson's character to head north and Waterston's character to head south while he says he'll head east. He then heads off to the west!
