The Simpsons series/movie is a comedy, and several times goes for the rule of "never let continuity get in the way of a good gag". The distance between the Simpson and Flanders households varies considerably, according to whatever the episode needs, and in the movie the two houses are indeed close enough for the gap to be bridged by one not very long plank.
