Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul's Hot Potato
Darth Maul is unsure what to do with his lightsaber when his death is upon him. As Obi-Wan lets go of the tubbie custard and jumps outta the big long hole, u see darth maul's lightsaber lit in his right hand. The shot changes and he has retracted it. Obi-Wan then cuts him in half and u see that Darthy boy's saber is lit in his left hand and as he falls he retracts it again....tragic really.

LMOA@Tubbie Custard! Yes, I noticed that too. Darth Maul made the same mistake that Obi-wan did. Except Maul's was a mistake. And his last. "It is unwise of you to lower your defenses!" --Darth Vader, AKA Anakin Skywalker, AKA Ani, AKA Darth Inhaler (this one supplied to us by Stormtrooper TK241!)

Maybe I didn't understand what you're saying, but I think it is because darth maul's lightsaber was cut in half, so what you saw first was the right side go out then when he was cut in half you saw the left half go out.

I see what your getting at there big. But I have checked and when Mauly boys sabre is cutted in half he drops one half, u see it fall behind him to the left of the screen. So.... he only have one half in his hand when he was cut in half and so must have swapped it from hand to hand.... clear now? Good.

Actually, I think that redness you see at the bottom of the screen is supposed to be Maul's blood. Look, I KNOW that cuts from lightsabers are cauterized, but not immediately. In fact, you can see blood when Luke's hand gets cut off in TESB. It does look like a lightsaber, but maybe it was just strangely illuminated. You don't hear a lightsaber igniting at all.

I don't think the redness is supposed to be blood. It's more likely supposed a screwy type of smoke. Perhaps it has something to do with Darth Maul's race and their anatomy. Ideally he's supposed to be red and orange under his clothes too. I remember seeing "blood" in ANH after Obi-Wan hacked off the arm of that dude in the cantina but rationalized that that also had something to do with his race. He was an Aqualish alien and the saber probably melted part of his arm or something. I don't know. They had a close-up on his arm, why would they screw something like that up? But then again this is Star Wars...
