I love this movie but there are many things wrong with the time setting.

It was set over the 1970's and there are many things in the movie that were not even created by that time.

I was told about these and double checked the dates on the internet.

1. When Augustens mother goes to the medicine cabinet full of bottles of pills a lot of them seem to have the child resistant caps which werent introduced until the 90's.

2. In a scene containing one of Augustens mum's poetry groups, which was said to be in 1978, Augusten's mum says that Anne Sexton gave a recital a week before but Anne Sexton passed away in 1974.

3. When Augusten and Natalie are in the kitchen, just before smashing up the ceiling, Natalie is smoking a cigarette. In a close up it is seen to be an American Spirit cigarette but this brand wasn't out in the 1970's.
