Secret Window, The - Important Button
This happens in the scene where Mort (Johnny Depp) is talking to the cop in the city. The cop starts a little clock with two buttons on the top to record how long Mort has been there. Then the cop says something rude and Mort stops the clock by pushing the other button on top down. The cop apologizes and amazingly, pushes the same button down that Mort did and starts the clock once again. If he was really that worried about his money, you think they would have made sure this part went smoothly.

I'm sorry, but that's how stopwatches work. I'm not absolutely sure about what happened from your description, but I think you may be a little confused. I'm not sure.

The slip-up is correct. It's not a stopwatch, it's a clock timer. You press the button on the right to start it, the button on the left to start it back up again. Both the detective and Mort press the button the same side, even though they're supposedly performing opposite actions.
