War of the Worlds (2005) - Cameras Still Work?

After the electrical storm in which the capsules were sent down, everything electronical did not work. No, TV, cameras, Watches, etc. So, after the plane crashes at the mothers house, why was the news crew's van working, along with their video? No one elses Tv's Worked, and Tom cruise only fixed that one car. So why is their's able to work?
