Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope - Floating Artoo
When Luke, Obi-Wan, C3-P0 and Artoo first enter the docking bay where the Melinnium Falcon is docked, they walk down a flight of stairs. You can see Artoo, who clearly cannot negotiate stairs, behind the others, pivoting around like he's walking down the steps. If you look closely you see that he is floating completely off the ground and twisting to make it look like he's walking down the steps. He's either being pivoted on some kind of stand or hanging by cords. It's pretty funny looking.

I read a piece in one of the young readers' series where R2 was rigged with foot thrusters (probably by Jaina). I'd like to see that idea used in a movie. What's one more R2 gadget? It would certainly be more fun! I don't know if it can be made believable, but at least it would be less of a slight-of-hand movie trick.

He's not actually floating. Kenny Baker (The Actor inside the droit at various stages) has his legs sticking out the middle masked in a grey/greenish material and is walking down the stairs. Earlier on in the film you can quite clealy see the actors legs as the hang down and finish up with a mock up of r2d2s foot on as shoes.

R2 could, in theory, go down stairs by the following method: 1) extending its middle leg to touch the next stair down (it would have to be close to the edge of the stair it is on) 2) retracting its middle leg while in such a position that its outer legs are moved down to the stair (this would require it to put all of its weight on the middle leg) It could go up stairs by doing this in reverse.

R2-D2 does navigate stairs using the method described by Pyro in Episode II Attack of the Clones. Right when Anikan and Padme arrive at the Theed palace to confer with Queen Jamillia, R2-D2 can be seen "walking" up the stairs behind Anikan and Padme.
