This movie takes place in about 1934, 5 years before WWII came about. However, in one scene where the journalist is describing the Scientist, she tells "Sky Captain" that they participated in a major weapons program during the First World War. No one at this time called it that because no one thought there would be another one.WWI only got its name after WWII. Before then it was called the Great War.
