Actually, according to Kate Winslet herself, they are tattoos. Because she has quite a few tattoos on her right (I believe it is right) arm and shoulder, they had to edit them off of her body in most of her scenes. Some shots were missed by the editing department. If you look close enough, you will see the tattoos appear, disappear, and then reappear in the same positions.

If this is a tattoo, then James C. really messed up because it was unheard of in those days for a woman proper lady to wear makeup let alone sport a tattoo!

Although there are some scenes where you do actually see her tattoos, I think that on this occasion it was beading from her dress.

Kate Winslet had an Australian stunt double for the movie which is why the tattoo disappeared .

It is some of the beading from her dress. I have seen this movie about a million times, and I have never seen any tattoos on Kate at any point in the movie, so in which scenes are they supposedly shown?

So...wait. I'm confused. Does Kate really have tat's or was it just her stunt double? There's two differant stories...which is true??

Hey "bluebrit" it was NOT uncommon for a proper lady to wear make-up. Women in those days were always going to the powder room (bathroom) to powder their nose (re-apply make-up). It was however uncommon for poor women to wear make-up, of course because they couldn't afford any.

It is actually a moon-shaped black dot - some embellishment that has come loose from her robe, clearly visible in closer shots. See www.imdb.com
