Actually, on the DVD, Tim Burton and Paul Reubens are on a commentary and the chain is talked about. They claim it was a mistake and was never shown this way in theaters. Only on TV pan and scan versions. They joke about how when the film was shown on T.V.'s in France, viewers there thought it was done on purpose. This also applies to the sign on tracks. The DVD is letterboxed so the bottom is of the screen is never shown.
