Erin Brockavich - Krispy Kreme
When Erin yells at the secretary by calling her "Krispy Kreme" no visible mistakes are made but considering the time that the movie is to take place and the setting (California), Krispy Kreme doughnut shops were not established then, especially in the West. Krispy Kreme's have been a phenomenon of the '90's and 2000's. She should have actually called her "Dunk-in Doughnut"!

Actually, the first Krispy Kreme donut was sold in 1937. There are Krispy Kreme franchises in over 30 states, including California. It is quite probable that Erin could have had some contact with a Krispy Kreme donut in that time period.

Remember, though, that Erin is not originally from Calif., rather she's from the mid-West. This could possibly explain her knowing about the Krispy Kreme chain.

Ok, since this movie is set in 1993, which is in the 90's. Good observation genius.

Krispy Kreme has been around the United States since the twenties or even earlier. Authors have made references to krispy kreme in many older books.

Although, yes, Krispy Creme doughnuts were probably not out west when this took place, Krispy Creme has been around since 1937. All it would take is one trip to the east coast or south to know about Krispy Kremes!

Try again my friend. The movie takes place in approximately 1991, therefore Krispy Kreme would be around according to your discovery about Krispy Kreme being "a phenomenon of the 90's".

Actually, the time setting of the movie "Erin Brockovich" WAS in the late 90's. The only reference to any earlier date was the mention that people had lived on that plume since the 1960's. So Krispy Kreme WAS, in fact, in operation and distribution all over the U.S. No slip-up. Sorry to disappoint.

My apologies. The movie was set in the earlier part of the 90's. Not the late 90's. But my point still stands.

I lived in California from 1976 to 1997 and I had never heard of Krispy Kreme doughnuts until I moved to the south. Plus, Julia Roberts is from Smyrna, GA so the reference probably came from her.
